How Does Tyre Warmth Affect Grip Performance?

Many drivers fail to realise that tyre performance can be affected by a wide range of different factors, including many that are out of our immediate control.

Temperature is one of the most critical influences on tyre performance, and how warm your tyres are can significantly affect their ability to grip the road surface.

So, to help you ensure your vehicle is performing safely and reliably this summer, we’ve shared our handy guide to warm weather and tyre grip performance below.

Tyre warmth and grip performance in Motorsport

Interestingly, the majority of these conversations are focused on motorsports (as temperature extremes are much more common in this context).

In motorsport, tyre temperature is managed extremely precisely. This way, specialists can ensure the right level of heat is maintained, thereby maximising the grip and performance of these premium tyres.

In fact, racing tyres are designed to work best within the temperature range of 80-110°C. Drivers use this to their advantage, and keep the tyres warm before a race by completing warm-up laps, and even using tyre blankets (for example).

When these tyres are cold, their grip is much lower, resulting in longer braking distances and a higher risk of sliding or understeering on corners.

In comparison, when these tyres are warmer, the rubber softens, which increases the grip, thereby ensuring sharper handling and greater responsiveness.

Causes of tyre warmth in everyday driving

Although these discussions are far more commonly seen in motorsports, it’s just as important to give our focus to how tyre temperature impacts everyday driving, too.

When driving on the roads, tyre temperature is affected by:

  • The weather conditions and the season
  • The temperature of the road surface
  • How length of your journey (longer drives result in warmer tyres)
  • How gently you drive
  • How aggressively you brake

How tyre warmth affects everyday driving

Tyre temperatures can significantly affect a number of key performance factors.

If your tyres are colder:

  • The tyres are stiffer, and less flexible
  • Grip is reduced
  • Braking distances are longer
  • Handling becomes less responsive, and it feels like you have less control
  • The risk of sliding increases

If your tyres are warmer:

  • The tyres offer grip
  • Traction increases
  • Steering feels more responsive
  • Braking performance feels more reliable and consistent

It is important to note that tyres have an optimum temperature range, which you should always try to maintain.

It’s also key to consider how consistent warmer weather can affect your tyres. For example, warmer weather can often lead to over-inflated tyres. So, it’s imperative that you check your tyre pressure regularly during warmer periods.

But, in everyday driving conditions, your tyres won’t get anywhere near as hot as motorsport tyres. So – outside of any extremes! – generally speaking, the warmer your tyres are, the more effectively they will perform.

Key takeaways for maintaining tyre performance during everyday drives

  • Before you start a journey (especially during cold weather) give your tyres a few extra minutes to warm up
  • Drive more gently at the start of a journey, to account for the initial reduced grip
  • Regularly check your tyre pressures, particularly during any periods of temperature fluctuation
  • If you are experiencing difficulties with your current tyres during the winter, consider investing in specific winter / all-weather tyres
